Thank you Jon. One of these days I will have the courage to weld together the TT1 muffler that you produced, and put it to good use. And, Carlo, that is a real compliment coming from you, the maestro. I can see you and Lou and Cranky singing together now, like the “three tenors”. Or is it the sopranos? MikeV

Hey Mike...
It certainly looks like you've achieved your goal. Bike looks fantastic. Nice choice in upgrades to the master cylinders, and I can't take my eyes off that front fender. Any gut feelings as to whether the 916 will be high revving as you hoped?

I think it resembles a 1987 version, maybe to be raced at Daytona or in The Battle of the Twins. I think the later CNC’d masters at least look like first versions of the gold radial masters; and they should perform well. Well it has only been run in the garage a handful of times so far, to check things out, but it still “feels” like a big engine. Only run it to 6000 or so, and finally got some color on the plugs with 268 (from 265s) atomizers and 190/200 main jets. The only true test will be the track. MikeV

Hey Mike,
A little delayed.......for some reason I missed your post on the unveiling of your bike fully clothed. Wow.....it looks fantastic!!! A dream bike if I ever saw one!! Now, after all of that work, I hope you have some great fun in the saddle for awhile!!!

In the spirit of honest reporting I have to say my introduction of this bike to a track was rushed. Took it to PIR June 6th, and it was not a success. The bike, and especially the engine are sound, but the following faults resulted in going home early and a long list of things to correct:

First, I may have touched the handlebar power-on switch during unloading, or maybe even earlier, but the battery was "flat"; this problem was later compounded when I found out that the small race alternator, or my wiring, was no longer producing even the 13V I had started out with when the engine was first tested (it seems the major problem may have been a new fuse box that was rattling a bit at the connections inside; even though I worked long (made 2" high aluminum spacers) on putting that correct fender on the Marzocchi forks the front tire rubbed notably once the tire got hot (installed a different fender that actually looks good and right); the chain was too loose (do not like starting out too tight) because it is difficult to measure with this swingarm - must measure on top (did that); the combo of a "braking" front wheel and a flapping chain really felt odd; the jetting was too rich, or at least for my very limited time on the track (have jetted down to 190/178); combine the latter with the fender and chain bucking and see what if feels like in a corner (you will not look smooth); I screwed around (free hand - no timing light) with the DYNA fixed-advance ignition, and mucked that up (put it back to 30 degrees advance). Finally, after the lunch break (did stay for the free lunch provided) the Pacific Northwest drizzle and rains arrived! Packed up and went home before I did some real damage. Another painful lesson in humility.

I believe I have corrected all these problems so will try again in August. Going to post some info about the small race alternators in the TT technical section.

Well, for what seems like forever I have been chasing small gremlins that have foiled every attempt to go around a track. But this last one has been a real killer. I have had trouble from the get-go getting the front cylinder to fire and to see a proper (any) color on the spark plug; the engine has started fine and run, but became erratic and very rough once the bike was rolling. Transition from slow to fast was jittery. I have changed jets, and atomizers, and needles, and the manifold sealing, and checked every electrical component related to this, and changed plugs and wires and coils, and on and on and...……….. was about to give up for the year and look for a new hobby. Then I looked at the back of the nemesis Mallossi front carb and saw that a small hole at the back at the rubber connector was not plugged, and it leads to a very small orifice just under the back of the slide. I looked at every other PHM carb I had and they were all plugged! But not this one. It had been leaning out the mixture so much as to make the front cylinder almost useless, like running on one and one-half cylinders. So I swapped that carb for another identical one and switched all the small parts into it and …. BINGO. She runs, and good now. This one really killed my spirit for a while. MikeV

Oh, and I even pulled the front cylinder head off chasing this problem. Sheesh.
