What state do you live in? It's my belief that Ducati didn't really think about year models in the way that we now do. They built motorcycles, exported them to various countries, and then let dealers try to sell them. In the case of the F1, this sometimes took a long time. I'm guessing that your bike was built in 86, but by the time it got registered, it was marked as an 87. Please post a photo of yours.

I have engine #7501527, that appears to be in nearly the last batch of bikes. Mine says model yr 1987.

When I say 1987, I am saying that my California title says 1987 year, the dealer's sales receipt says its 87 and the late serial number appears to be 87 based upon Fallon book. It does not say 87 anywhere on the bike.

ps my bike was race bike, so not a good xample to use for stock bike.

Hi Clay,

Mine did not have a sidestand. Has floating front rotors, but I don't recall the exhaust collars or heads. My Engine number is 7501154 which according to Falloon's book is early/mid 86.

Heads have date stamps, as did brembo hydraulics. I would think all will be easily within 12 months of the actual build/VIN date. Could be a good quick verification.

Hey Nick, that's a good tip, where approx is the date stamp on the heads?

Clay

I'm looking at a vertical head now, and the date embossing is to the right of the cam pulley.

Here is what I see.....a round embossing with 85 in the center and then a dot on top of the number 10. So I assume this means October of 85. This seems too early?? my engine # shows as same as Montjuich per fallon and the heads is a big valve/small spark plug. It does appear that the very first big valve heads started in late 85 per the book?

Your heads were cast in October 1985. I wonder... how many heads in that batch? How long does it take for the heads to get from the foundry to the machine shop to the factory store, to the production line to the bike?

I am very interested to know what date everyone else's heads were made.

I will check my Montjuich and Laguna Seca today and report back.

Interesting thread Clay!

Also, I have all the original brake and clutch hoses....I checked the dates on those. All had brembo 1985 dates, mostly Oct 85.

Mike,

All valid questions. I'd add "how long did those heads sit on the shelf before being installed on an engine? How long did the engine sit awaiting a frame? How long did the assembled motorcycle sit on the factory floor before being exported?

I haven't checked mine yet but I wouldn't be surprised if the vast majority of heads (and other engine components) had 85 date stamps on them.

I will report back soon.

Ciao!

My engine number is 7501154 and the casting stamp on the head is 9/85.

BTW-the engine number should be a decent indicator of build date. According to Falloon "toward the end of 1986 the final batch of 300 F1s was constructed, beginning at engine number 7501505. So my engine number of 7501154 would indicate a build date of sometime in mid to late 1986.

Also, there was a thread somewhere about the US models having the additional VIN plate welded on them as the factory had not implemented a 17 digit VIN. There is an additional number stamped on my steering head tube of DGM 51787 OM. Anyone else have a similar stamping?
