Hi,
My rear master cylinder is locked up. The stock old style Brembo round 12mm reservoir unit on F1 and Pantahs. I don't see much info around on rebuilding the rears, I did see some tips on doing the front. Looks like the rear is the same set up. The one mystery that I was not up to speed on, I thought there would be a circlip or something holding the guts in, but it appears that is not the case. There is some sort of pressed in plug and you have to drive it out by inserting something small in to the opposite/hose end of the cylinder. Right?

Any comments, should I rebuild or just dump it and put a more modern cylinder on it. Looks like kit is only about $30 us.

As I recall it drives out with a brass drift. Denatured alcohol is a good "safe" solvent to clean brake components with, you might try soaking the m/c for a while to help unfreeze the piston. If you get your rebuild kit from Bevel Heaven, you might run your questions by Steve, he is very helpful. Links are to a rebuilding guide and the kit I think you need.

Thanx Bill......
I did see those too.....I am cheap bastard, I didn't want to pay for the instructions. But maybe I will, its probably worth it. I was surprised that there was no detail in the Ducati workshop manual and I only found 1 how to on the front master via the internet.

You drift the piston assy out with a punch through the outlet hole. you clean and clean and clean and assemble. The piston is held in by a ring that drifts in the end. You use a piece of tubing that fits over the piston and is slightly smaller in dia. than the bore of the cyl. VIOLA!

Forgot to add, You can use a small flex-hone or even scotchbrite [on a mandrel] to clean up light scratches in the bore. Just don't get too aggressive with it.

I did save that rear master and got it rebuilt. AND.....got to ride my F1 for the first time today. The clutch and transmission both work too :-) I dont see any oil leaks anywhere yet either.....not bad for sitting for 27 years.

AND not too bright......I thought the transmission was bad at first......but then I figured out it has GP shift pattern??

I was thinking I don't have that much more to do, some clean up, probably some brake pads, fork oil/maybe seals, some shake down runs and a little tuning. Be done in a month or so at my part time slow pace. But, just heard that I have to take a 4 month work trip to Australia. Now maybe I can finish this thing up by the end of the year?
