 Post subject: F1 Critique, now turns over & valve clearance

Hi Guyz,
Ok....be gentle.....tell me what you think. I had some time this weekend to look my new toy over. So far this bike looks pretty good to me (but I am not a road racer or F1 expert) and I do believe that it is period built and untouched since. The newest stuff I can find on it is 1990, it is an 1987 that was purchased in 1988. It appears to me that it has most of the right stuff and was done pretty well. Here is the laundry list and what I think I know until corrected. I think I wont restore much, just clean it up and hope to get it running, only some of the fasteners and exhaust have some corrosion on them, that's about it.

Body: Stock tank: Airtec race glass, Paso front fender?
Frame: Stock frame with chopped lowers, removed passenger mounts, braced steering head, custom exhaust mount, powdered white ala 851, verlicchi aluminum arm
Frame ancillaries: Battery relocated to behind motor, after market steering damper to left side, nice aluminum instrument pod/oil cooler hanger, magura aluminum clip-ons & aluminum pegs
Suspension: stock forks with white power rear shock
Wheels/tires: Marvic 17 mags front and rear & Michelin slicks
Gearing: 15/42
Brakes: front - Brembo Gold Billet GP2 with big floaters(320?), rear - stock caliper & master with floater(260?)
Clutch and front brake masters are updated Brembo square/coffin style reservoirs (whatever they are called)
Electrical: Looks like total loss with dyna coils
Engine: I haven't opened up the motor, this is based upon owners log book and receipts. High compression pistons, ported head and Montjuich valves and cam (but also have a receipt for an NCR 7, and log shows this as last used), 41mm Mik flat slides, big Earls oil cooler, looks like home made/custom adjustable belt pullies
Exhaust and head pipe: Not sure? open megaphone with clamp on mounting, have a receipt that says Montjuich and one that says TT/NCR
Clutch case and clutch cover, both aired out, not sure if custom job or aftermarket
Everything looks wired up and braided up.....

When was it last run? Does it turn over? It looks very nicely set up to me, and has all the makings of a really fun track day bike. I'd be very tempted to put fresh oil, belts, brake fluid, and tires on it and go put a big smile on your face. You'll know exactly what you want to do to it after you start riding it.

Last ran in 1990 or 91. I haven't tried to turn it over yet......I have lubed up the top end. About ready to change the oil and filter...see what that looks like. If good, I will throw some fresh oil in and turn it.

Hi Cal...
Your "laundry" list would fill all the top slots of my wish list if I were to ever build a TT/F1. I agree with pantah good, get everything sorted and freshened up then go for a ride.

That's almost the twin to my old F1. All the same basic equipment. Really fun to ride. If it has the NCR7 s it will feel a bit flat until about 4500 and then pull well to10k. Makes a beautiful noise!

That is one sturdy looking battery holder! Compare that with the one on my old Harris.

Brown shag - groovy! Lets hear more about your Norton. Actually, last time I talked to Lou, he said we should probably have a separate Norton area on this forum. I suspect he might have just been humoring me though...

You are right, that battery box looks over built. I love the NCR clutch case on your bike...super neat.

Norton......here ya go 70 Fastback....mildly modified....High compression head, Norris cam, Flat slides, Trispark. Norton disc brake front end, vintage Akronts......

Beautiful!! I'm having trouble spotting anything that needs work though, unlike my '72 Combat Roadster. Can I borrow that shag rug when you're all done?

Yeah.....you have a little more work to do than me.....but I can tell you have a free'r flow'n exhaust system than mine.
