Post subject:  Hammer time.

Hi folks, awhile back I was thinking of building a non Ducati engined bike. And this is the bike I’ve always liked. The xrtt 750 Harley which was transformed into the bike known as Lucifers hammer. With gene church on board it won 3 BOTT titles. I had gotten to the point I needed a challenge. And this is it. I hope you enjoy. Boucher.

File comment: There are so many incarnations of Lucifers hammer. I’ve chosen this one. The one that went head to head against luckys f1 750 at laguna seca. Lucky won and gene church crashed in the corkscrew.

File comment: Cr-mo swingarm, I just looked at a lot of photos and guessed abit. The bit that it bolted to is called the tomahawk apparently. It’s standard HD sportster. HD tubing is very thick.

File comment: Oil tank I folded up from pictures. It has baffles inside to stop oil surge. A old mate welded it up. It’s got a lot of drain as I’m not sure how many I need back from the top end.

File comment: This was the start, I tracked down a set of xr750 cases. The swingarm was entirely made from pictures. Same as the under engine oil tank. I had a snippet of the plans for it with the only detail I could find of use was the 45 degree slope on the front. So I just measured everything in inches. This was the outcome. Oil drops out of bigend into tank than up into pump to the donk again.( hopefully)

Chris, great to finally see some of the progress.
What a challenge, you are the man for the job!!!
Looking forward to the next instalment.
Is the swingarm fabbed from sheet or plate?

Hi Paul, I used 2”x1” cr-mo tube and cr-mo sheeting on the swingarm. The pivot came from a ironhead as per original. It carry’s timken bearings. I cut the front of old steel arm and welded it to my arm. Than I sort of boxed it in for strength. I mounted it to a thick (3/4”) plate as a jig and tig welded it all together. Boucher.

This is the oil tank. Normally they run a small oil pan and two pumps. One scavenger pump picks it up out of the small pan up into a frame mounted tank. Than it it’s drawn down into the pressure side and too the engine. This larger oil pan the oil drops into it than is picked up by the pressure side of the pump only. Than off to the engine at 7psi. All needle bearings. Boucher.

Thanks Lou, Paul. I’ve learned that on this build HD put a R after every part number. For Race apparently. To me I’d say it’s for Rare. But I’ll get there!. Boucher.

Post subject:  Re: Hammer time.

Hi folks, the original Lucifers hammer they say was based on mark brelsfords 1973 fire ball Daytona bike. The story goes they resurrected the frame at the beginning of BOTT. They fitted modern wheels and suspension and braced up the frame. They also made the boxed style swingarm for the much wider mag wheels. With mine I found xrtt blueprints on the net, though you couldn’t read the numbers. The only number that was clear was the steering tube at 2.25” diameter. So a mate put it up on his computer and we scaled up all the measurements. Only than could you read some of the dimensions. So armed with my swingarm and tomahawk I approached dave kellet in qld to make the frame out of cr-mo. The main deviation was to use a Ducati bevel sized steering tube. I think we settled on 26degree angle. 8months later I had a frame. Boucher.
