That is a beautiful hunk of metal. Taking no short cuts on this restoration, are you? Watch this for fun.

Hello Ducati friends, I can report that after 2 years or more I have the bottom end finally together. There was a bit of trouble with piston/ crank clearance and crankcase/ crank clearance. A few oil galleries had to be rerouted and some blocked off. As I'm running no centre gasket I've had to have some gearbox shims made. I've also have gone to the trouble of making a plate to carry a outrigger bearing (c3) on the left side because with the major bore increase the cases are a bit thin. So onto the next stage. This is a nice piece of machining.

Keep up the good work!

Have been busy juggling cam timing gear/offset key. Finally got the timing marks close and measured the cam timing. All measurements are at 1mm lift.

Inlet 37 btdc
Inlet 55 abdc

Exhaust 75 bbdc
Exhaust 14 atdc

How do these figures stack up in the Ducati world. Boucher.

Hi Boucher...
To get a better idea if you have racing cams, you need to measure the max. lift in mm. To get some insight as to what those offset keys are doing you need to measure the point of max. lift in degrees. Duration and overlap aren't excessively high but if the cams are a special grind, the person who spec'd them may have wanted a rider friendly bike as opposed to a widow maker. One curious thing though is, the difference in the calculated point of max. lift in degrees between intake and exhaust is 21.5 degrees. Not unheard of but seems kind of high.
Best Regards...

I found 32/75 inlet 60/45 exhaust in the books but it isn't stated with what lift. Couldn't find the owners manual to check. Sometimes Ducati measured with more free play so that could be a difference.
There was a limited batch of performance camshafts made for the 500 Desmo series which gave a substantial gain in power and a substantial drop in reliability :-)
Saw them in action (compared to my bike) but never SAW the real deal.
Great work on the crank.
Fantastic bike to ride : I wished I could've added a few ponies to it (more than putting some 32s on it).

ciao

those figures give centrelines of 99 and 120. i'd probably retard it 10 degrees for a starting point.
