Post subject:  Pantah Back on Track

I've been racing my Pantah in New Zealand over the last 2 months. Four race meetings and about a dozen races all completed with no breakdowns, crashes and I stayed in one piece and got a few podiums. I'll be out again in February so have a few weeks to do a bit of maintenance and refurbishment.
Kind regards
Phil

Welcome Phil, good to see you on the track.

We would love to see some more pics of your Pantah No.8. What is the chassis you are using?

Cheers,

Hi Mike
the chassis is standard Pantah frame with Ohlins shocks. Most of the mods have been to the engine, eg Carrilo rods, forged hi comp pistons, race cams, porting/gas flow, dry clutch, new primary drive, etc, etc. I've got some refurbished forks to put on next and the class rules have been changed to allow floating discs, so the 260mm cast iron rotors will be swapped out soon to save some weight. Interested in any thoughts or recommendations any one has for improvements.....apart from the obvious as I've got a 916 for modern era racing. I want to keep this bike as a Pantah racer.
Kind regards
Phil

Phil,

Your Pantah racer is a very sharp and tidy bike! I think it looks the biz but would you take a guess at machine weight? Also curious if you don't mind what group or class the Pantah is eligible in for comparison with similar classic racing over here in Canada or the States.

Cheers and thank you,

Francis

hi Francis
I've never weighed my bike but estimate its about 20kg lighter than when it was on the road in mostly original trim. That would make it about 170kg. Its a noticable difference. In terms of rotating mass, the alternator rotor has gone and the Al alloy clutch basket is about 1kg lighter than the stock steel basket. The Carillo rods are lighter but I think the forged pistons will be heavier than stock. I've left the starter motor on just for convenience and its original ignition but total loss. The fibreglass tank and seat gave a good weight saving. As did replacement of the front subframe with a home made alloy bracket and removal of the Clocks.

There should be a few more kilos shed when the cast iron rotors are swapped and I get a Li/Fe battery.

I race in a Pre '82 class <600cc. The main competition is the 350/400 TZ Yamahas and the TT2's. The 4 cylinder 500 two strokes run in open class so the Pantah is reasonably competitive. Here's a link to the combined Pre 89/ Pre 82 race results from an International meeting in October. I was 10th or 5th in class.

"any similarity is purely coincidental" :) .........I got to choose my race number back in 2002. In the racing tradition I used the place number where I finished in the championship the previous season, but it was a different championship in a different country 17 years earlier on different bike! Bit of a stretch I know but I'm glad you you made the link....I'll dig out some pics of my no.8 with the NCR fairing like Tony's below

This was taken at the New Zealand TT in 2005, I think I fluked a 2nd in that one because it started to rain and I was on treaded tyres.
