Post subject:  Welded Crankshaft.

Just putting one out there for the old timers. Has anyone done or heard of welding up a crankshaft jounal to increase the stroke? Was it a success? I've read about vw cranks being welded to stroke[ before billet] and they seem to work. Any thoughts on this subject would be appreciated. Boucher.

My memory says it was done to Guzzi cranks in the past, but I cannot remember who offered the service; I guess it worked. I read somewhere, in some old hotrod reference book, that the weld can be as strong as the crank. It is definitely "old school", since I have seen little mention of it anywhere. There is an amazing number of Ducati crank sizes (strokes) out there, so you must be working with something unique. MikeV

I spoke with a bruce meyers quite a few years ago about doing that to a ducati crank shaft and was warned off it due to the process that ducati does to their cranks, as Mike says I have heard of it being done to guzzi cranks.
good luck!

Back when the Pantah was only a 750 I played with stroking. It can be done safely but is all about correct process. I think I still have some of the weld wire around. Stroking was common back then but the only one I know that still offers this servise is APE http://www.racecranks.com/
As MikeV mentioned. With such a selection of later model cranks custom stroking would not make much sense.
