Just a small question. Has any one used the standard 600 pantah rings [meant for the chrome bore] in a cast iron sleeve? Or will i source other rings? Boucher.

Man, I thought someone would chime in on this one. Give the guy some help here! MikeV

PS: Once I used some modern (for Nikasil) Guzzi pistons in CI sleeves and never saw a problem after many miles.

The main and I think only difference in the rings is the top ring isn't chrome plated. The result will be somewhat more wear as the ring is softer to more readily bed in to the chrome bore. The other two rings are usually unplated so they shouldn't be any problem. They should seat really well and if you don't hammer it too much they should last pretty well.

Thanks for the info. Another question you might be able to help with. Will modern monster 600 barrels fit earlier pantahs[500] Will the oil spigot and o-rings line up between cases and the older heads? Boucher.

Hello Boucher. I will get back to your question about mix'n'match cylinders/cases in a day or two; right now too much red wine after a weekend in the motorhome to give you a clear answer. The short answer is that nothing drops in, put they can be made to work. MikeV

PS: I think wdietz has it right. There was a great limited printing(s) by a Seattle Guzzi dealer several years ago, called "Guzziology". In there he discussed this issue, and the thing about the top ring sounds similar.

Hello Boucher. Yes, contemporary 600 or 620 (80 mm bore) cylinders can be used with the older 600-650 cases and heads. The major problems are: 1) the cylinders are the larger 96.5 mm diameter like the 750cc engines; but the walls are so thick (8+mm) that they can be turned down to fit inside the 600 spigots of the case, 2) they have switched the recesses for the three big green O-rings to the cylinders from the heads; you can fill one or the other with JB Weld, 3) they have also switched the recess for the small O-ring around the oil passage dowel to the cylinders; I used two O-rings. I do not remember locating dowels being a problem. It is also neat that the newer 620 engine pistons (80mm x 61.5mm), not the 600, have nice high-compression bumps in them that you can probably squeeze into stock Pantah heads. Here are photos of the No. 8 Pantah Rutter/Slinn IOM racer replica (2011 postings) with the setup I just explained. Only difference is that these were bored to 82mm. MikeV
