 Post subject: Clutch Confusion

I've been installing a new Surflex clutch and I finally got new springs so I was putting it all together. As I screwed down the Clutch Control Disk and as the springs engaged, the outside DRIVEN DISK, popped out. Clearly, it doesn't stay in the clutch pack behind the retaining spring. What's got me confused is that (unless I got the order jumbled) I took them out in the same order with a DRIVEN disk on the outside, not a DRIVING disk. The parts diagram shows a DRIVING disk, as the outer most disk but the Surflex diagram shows it as a DRIVEN disk.

The pack comes with 8 DRIVEN disks, one is narrower than the rest. It looks like from the Surflex diagram, that goes in first. Then I end up with a spare DRIVEN disk.

Also, from the diagram provided with the clutch, it looks like the SHINEY side of the first DRIVING disk goes in first with the side with the gold side out. Right?

Is it that the Surflex diagram is drawn for a number of different applications?

This is going on a track bike, is it reasonable to safetywire the bolts holding the control disk or is that over kill?

It almost looks like a wet clutch set installed in a dry clutch. But the drawing looks wrong for any Pantah. The last plate (driving, or whatever it is) installed, facing you, must have a metal outer surface, have the outside tabs, and be big enough to be held in by the big ring. Then should have about 1/8th inch of space below the retaining ring, before the pressure plate is installed.

Looking again, why dont you put that small driven ring inside the stack, just after the conical ring is installed, and then put that metal surface friction (driving) ring outside? Problem solved?

No need for wire.

From the parts diagram it looks like a metal disk goes in first then the disks with the tabs, alternating until you get to the outside disk with the tabs. Except that in the diagram, the outside disk is a different part number. Looks backwards from what I took out. No guarantee that what I took out was correct though.

May help if you don't already have it. From the F1 service manual available on the Bevel Heaven website.

Old rule of thumb...When in doubt, safety wire anything you don't want falling off.

I have the manual but it doesn't get into the specifics of the order of the disks and the Surflex clutch pack is different that what I took out of there. Thinking I just match what I took out and keep my fingers crossed.

I like your rule of thumb.

The order in the parts manual will work. But don’t use it for the cam bearings. MikeV
