Post subject:  Engine pucks/Fin dampers - Do I need them?

I took out the rubber fin dampers while cleaning and painting cylinders and heads. They are as hard as plastic after 30 years.
Must I replace them, or do you guys run without them?

Don't want to drop fins because of metal fatigue, but if the only negative is some minor "ringing" from the fins I don't think I will bother to order and put in new ones.

What's your experience?

I don't know for what that find damper are made for, but I removed from my Alazzurra and run it normally.

We actually put a bunch back in once because we were flunking sound checks, but then they lost interest in doing sound checks so took them back out. They didn't make any noticeable difference anyway.
