Here is a question for those of you who know motorcycle electrical components :

Two years ago, I have bought a new Rick's rectifier / regulator to replace the OEM one. Although the Rick's rectifier was suppose to be for a 750F1, it can receive only two wires from the alternator.

Following an "expert in electricity " advice, I connected the 2 yellow wires of the alternator to the rectifier and I simply put electrical tape on the red wire and did not connected it to the rectifier. Everything seems to work fine since two years, although I must admit that I only ride my F1 during short (20 minutes) track sessions.

I do not want to do any arm to my electrical system, so is there any member of this forum who can give me his expert opinion on the fact of using a 3 wires alternator with a rectifier who can receive only two yellow wires ?

Thanks

I will risk seeming an idiot, but my understanding of motorcycle alternators is that they usually shunt excess electricity to ground. Automobile charging systems are larger and vary their outputs, but bikes need simpler, lighter systems. Shunting to ground is what should happen in the regulator and what the third wire usually is for.

I do not know the Rick's device, but a simple test is to connect a volt meter to the battery. Rev the motor: It should stop at approximately 14.1v. More than that and it probably is not shunting excess voltage to ground. That could eventually fry some expensive bits.

Thanks for this reply, Danomar. But, the rectifier is connected to the ground. So, that is the way it direct excess current and protects the battery.

I, too, have been hoping for some expert comments Gilles. But I am curious; have you ever hooked up a meter to the battery posts to see what the output of the regulator is? If your battery has not gone flat over time it would seem to be working.

PS: Have you installed the new ignition?

Hi Mike,

No, I did not put a meter on the battery terminals to check the voltage coming from the rectifier / regulator.

I began the installation of the left side cover that Sauro Collini brought with him when he came in Canada for one week this last summer. I began also the installation of the Elektronic Sachse ignition.

I realize that a thinner stator / rotor combination would give a better fit. Since the stator will be in an open environment, I don't want it to receive dust. A stator the size as was fitted on the early ST2 would be a perfect fit. Now, I need to know which stator I should buy given my actual Rick's rectifier; either a one phase (2 yellow wires) or a three phases (2 yellow and 1 red wires).

More on this installation as it progresses.

Gilles

Ducati replaced the regulator with the newer two wire around 97, most were done under warranty, replacement two wire ones meant you lost the dash light.
The next series of bikes got bigger charging systems to keep up with the demand of the newer models.
I still use the old 180 on my 748sp which is track only and there are no problems.
