Here is an update concerning the installation of new Marvic Streamline magnesium 17 inches wheels on my 750F1 :

I got these wheels thru Fred Renz (Yoyodyneti.com) who was of very good assistance. Marvic has accepted to make a 5.0 inches wide rear wheel for me at no extra cost. That way, I was able to mount a 160/60 tire (Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa 120/60 ZR-17 at the front and 160/60 ZR-17 at the rear).

As you can see, the front wheel is a perfect fit. Absolutely no modification was needed.

The rear wheel is a little tricky: Marvic did not bother to reduce the hub's width accordingly to the 1/2 inch reduction of the wheel's width. So, I had to order from Sprockets Specialists specially made rear sprockets with a 5/8 inch offset to the inside. I may also have to machine the cush drive a little bit to reduce its width, but I will know for sure after I receive an offset rear sprocket.

In comparaison with my 16 inches Marvic / Akront wheels with Pirelli Sport Demon 120/80 V-16 and 150/80 V-16 tires, my new setup gives a weight saving of 7 pounds at the front and 9 pounds at the rear. This should make a huge difference in acceleration, breaking and leaning into corners. The use of radial tires will also greatly improve the cornering habilities of my bike on race tracks.

Thanks to all those who have contributed their comments and advices.

Gilles Lachance

Thanks so much for posting your efforts on the site Gilles. As Andrew Zimmern (the chef who eats strange foods and animals on TV) would say, "WOW! That's really good". Photos and info like this keep others going. I know that at least one other member here is going through the same process right now. They are beautiful wheels (looks like a factory bike from here), and it will be well worth the effort. MikeV

PS: Yes, those sprocket bolts are frighteningly close to the swingarm.

Looks very good.
I'm curious to know about your driving experience after this modification, but assume it must be quite a major improvement.

Yesterday, I received the two rear sprockets (40 and 42 teeth) that Sprockets Specialists made to order for me (with a 5/8 inch offset to the inside).

I have installed one and I am glad to report that my new Marvic wheel now seats perfectly in the middle of the Verlicchi swing arm (with the new spacers that I have made), that the gearbox and rear sprockets seems perfectly aligned and that the chain clears the 160 tire by 1/8 inch approximately.

A precision here : I made the conversion to 520 pitch chain and sprockets a few years ago.

And the gearbox sprocket (bought from Ed Millich) have a little offset to the outside.

The shape of the rear sprockets made by Sprockets Specialists (in aircraft quality aluminium) is not the best looking, but it does the job.

Hi Gilles,
Nice job, you must be pretty happy with your wheels. I also had to move the rear sprocket inboard on my JB-Power wheel cush, but did it with two pieces. Drew up an adapter for my machinist friend to make, and ordered some special mount regular thickness flat sprockets from Sprocket Specialists to bolt on the adapter. A lot of work, as you know, but works good.

I have fitted modern Ducati SS1000DS wheels to my wife Santamonica to get the better tyres and brakes. This is a street bike so I decided to go with the modern 320 discs with 65mm callipers on the front from the same SS1000DS. I needed to get some caliper adaptor brackets made to allow the callipers to mount correctly. The rest was straight forward. Needed to raise the guard. The guard already had lower additional holes from original so just lifted guard up and bolted back on.

The rear went straight in as long as I used the SS1000DS rear caliper and bracket. The F1/Santamonica rear master cylinder is not correct diameter for the SS caliper so it was simple to again use the master cylinder arrangement and hose from the SS1000DS. My wife wanted to use the Powerhouse rearsets that came with the Santamonica so I made an adaptor lever to get the correct ratio from rearset lever to master cylinder lever. The sprocket mounting face alignment was exactly as per the original Santamonica - Needed to buy a 520 sprocket to replace the 525 that the SS1000DS comes standard with and bolt in using the Santamonica axle.

I use Dunlop Qualifier 3 (120ZR70 x 17) on the front with a Dunlop sports smart dual compound (180/55ZR70 x 17) on the rear - with these tyres I needed to lower the triple clamps 6mm to give nuetral steering in the corners. Stability great and easy to flick side to side. The improvement in braking has been great. That is the area where my wife feels the difference - she has more confidence as the brakes are easier to use and progressive in feel - stops like a modern bike.

I thought that this info may help others who are looking for wheels and brakes for the street at an affordable price. Bike still looks the part as most people don't even notice the changes. Keeping the original parts for one day latter when we can't ride anymore.

Since I did this mod I have found that Rich (Louigimoto) has similar brackets if anyone wants to go this way. I made a few sets as well - it was not costing that much after the first set was done. I will list them on the for sale page if anyone is interested - colours silver, gold or black. The attached photo shows the pinkish red ones that my wife wanted as it is her bike. I am in Australia.

I believe that these brackets may also suit any Marzzocchi fork that has 08 brembo callipers with 280mm discs and you want to go to the 320mm discs - I can be contacted through the forum - hope this may be of assistance

regards Peter

Handy information Peter!

So you both made it home safely from Philip Island? How many Km was the round trip?

Cheers,
Mike Arnott
