There's a set of 17" Mavics on ebay to fit the 851. I've been looking at the "plug and play" Marvics on Two Wheel Classics, but wouldn't mind saving a few $$ if these would work. The Two Wheel deal is about $500.00 more, but it comes with all of the attachments. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Also, any thoughts on tires -I want to run the bike in the LRRS P-89 class and some other vintage races and could use the advice.

Thanks,

Gene

Hi Gene,
LRRS P89 Light- good for you! Getting the right wheels is hard. I'll assume you are talking about the eBay Marvics located in Louisville? And also assume they would be intended for a Pantah TT/F1 style chassis? IMO, a 5 1/2" rear is too wide for one of these bikes, and can cause front sprocket offset problems for a Pantah engine. That eBay front would have rotor mounting hole pattern and offset for the later 320 o.d. style rotors, so your fork sliders would have to be set up for that style caliper mounting. I'll guess The Two Wheel Classic front wheel would have the rotor mounting for the older style 280 and 300 o.d. rotors. Again, your forks would have to position your calipers accordingly. Looks like they are only showing a choice for a 5 1/2" wide rear, but say (3) rear widths are available. There are a lot of things to think about working together when choosing a set of wheels, though there is generally a way to adapt all the various components, but some need more work than others.

Race tires are easy - they're all good.

Try Kämna Ducati in Germany, my wheels were almost 1000 dollars less than two wheel classics

I've got a 5.5 on my F1 and it works fine. I used to run a 180 on it but I went to a 160 and it transformed the handling, turns easily and very stable. My riding style isn't the snap it on its side type, I'm too old and fat for that.

You might be even happier with that 160 if it was on a 4 1/2" rim, but like we all know, ideal wheels for these bikes are hard to come by.

I've got the 5.5 inch Marvic on mine with a 180/55. You need to use the offset drive sprocket for the Montjuich. AFAM and JT stock them if I remember correctly.

I have 350/17 and 550/17 Marvics with 120/70/17 and 180/55/17 tires mounted. I am not a racer but this setup works well for the street.

your f1 looks just right with that combination, just how it should have been from scratch. I run3,5 front 4,5 rear on my Mont, but am in the process of going up to 5.5 rear as the smaller wheel looks too dwarfed by the whopping seat unit, although the handling is just fine. Nice bike, looks right.

I agree with Ian, very nicely modified. Is that a side stand peeking under from the left?

There are some nice mods there Tom. Great looking ride. Let's see some more pics if you have them.
