Hi all, a few years ago I bought an F3 in japan with the idea of bolting an F1 top end onto it and all would be ok.
I went out and bought a crankshaft, barrels, pistons, 38mm carbs (off a TZ), some 18in wheels, an ohlins shock s/h and some 41mm rwu forks with triple clamps off an early bimota (all from japan) thinking that I just needed some heads and cams.
The plan is for a nice roadbike that I can club register ($80 year pre 1988). I have my TZ to use on track.
After reading about Steve Loudbike's head work, I was/am very tempted even tho it is stretching the budget.
Then I bought Ian Falloon 's book which arrived today,, I have read it twice now and am starting to think that now my 350 bottom end may not be up to the job.
Original thoughts were if I could get 70/75 hp out of it, that would be enough for a roadbike.
Your thoughts ? Peter

Update : I had a chat to Brad Black today and have decided to (under his advice ) take the motor out and put it aside and get another one. So now I go shopping on ebay.
Ciao

Hi this is an idea I had a couple of years ago,
But with useing the paso motor as a start but there are extra mods required to adapt the swing arm.

What are you shopping for?? I recommend checking insurance write-offs available here: --> Ducati Insurance Auctions, Australia

I bought a 2007, 1100cc Hypermotoard statutory write off for around $3,000. The benefit of one of these is you also get ALL the associated parts you may need. ;)

Note! Check for cracked engine mounts!

Thanks for the link Mike. :)
Brad suggested looking for a '97/'98 750 as my first choice, with 600/400 an option (more work, but supply/demand an issue).
Last nite the fuel injection option occurred to me (as I would be moving away from period correct anyway, so why not go a little further ?) and your link would give me all bits needed, so I will go chat to Brad again.

Auburn, I am happy to go the bearing route as I don't think bushes are good enough & the how to, is here on the site (thank god !)

Can you please drop in the link to the How to for inserting bearings into the crankcase for the swingarm ? ;)

Meanwhile here is another solution for the same/similar problem :) This will help anyone who wants to slot an 800cc Hypermotard engine into a 400 F3 chassis! Coool  Note, you need the donor chassis from the Hypermotard to chop the swingarm mounts from, and no crankcase bearings required. Though bearings do need to be inserted into your swingarm which is easier than splitting the cases!

I was just thinking duhhh... well he got me there  - then I reread my post and I didn't actually say the bearings were inserted into the case's , but anyway thanks for saving me the time to find the thread.
Second update : ;)
Today I went back and saw Brad again. Yesterday he spat out so much information at me that I was pretty well confused by the time I got home, so today he went thru it all again & this time it made some sense.
First, prefer '98 or later motor because the crankcases are stronger and have a better oil supply.
Pre 98 only go the 750 cos the 600's & 400's used weaker cases.
'01/'02 ? all except monster went fuel inj. Pretty sure he said monsters went fi in '06

A carbed motor is the easiest: as fi you need to deal with the fi plugs in the cases. Ignition ?

A fi motor can be used, with carbs but then you have to use an after market ignition like ignitech or zeeltronic. (I have got a zeel on one of my bikes & they are good.)

The full fuel inj. route. You will need a fuel pump, return lines and so on. You would need a donor bike there and apparently would be a large job.

The option Brad liked was an 800 motor, with ignition & flat slides. He says some guys are getting some good results out of them. You just put your pantah heads on.

Theres a rough guide as best as I can remember.

Put in a bid on the 800 Hypermotard for $2,000. You might win it :P If you do win it, you can part out and sell the bits you don't need. You may get your $2,000 back??

You will have everything you need to build your bike, including the fuel pump which you can install in your F3 tank!

The tricky bits will be; doing the frame mod below for the swingarm, deciding to cut the bottom of the fuel tank to make way for an air box. There is a chap in Melbourne who can do this work and fit your fuel pump also.

The wiring harness is already setup for the battery to be located at the rear of the bike as with an F1, all you need to do is thread it all.

Have a review of my Full Monty Project (it is on hold while of renovate the back of my house and build a shed. Hey  and I have a real Monty to play with now anyhow!) you will see the hurdles I have met so far, which for the most part I now know how to resolve :P

The catch is - if your donor bike has had a hard enough whack in the front end you may end up needing to repair the engine mounts in the cases. :(

This is how I got round the problem.
Harris frame and swing arm,
Put roller bearings in the swing arm to match the shaft diameter of spindle through the rear of the motor,
Used the alloy plates on either side for extra suport.
Seems to work well.[

That's ingenious!, do you make kits?

Can you post some more pics of your bike - in the Registry section? ;)
