Mike, you want me to cut holes in my beautiful aluminium tank ? BLASPHEMY !

Alright the holes are in the bottom, but how big a recess will I have to create to get clearance for the airbox ! 100x100x50mm ?
Couldn't the airbox be cut down ?
That bike is in Perth so I would be up for another grand to get it to melb.
Can't you forget the renovations & get on with the bike ? (you know you want to)
I would prefer to watch how you get on then make a decision.
There will be other 800's come up.
Peter

PS - Safe riding over the weekend! Isn't is supposed to be nearly summer over there yet?

F3 with an aluminium tank? Not as standard. :( But you are lucky if it is!

Only two models came with an aluminium tank - the 1985 750 F1 - Red/White/Green with Gold painted wheels with the Giugiaro designed Ducati font (860) and the Montjuich. There are a couple of differences between the '85 and Montjuich tanks - the most visible being that the 1985 tank has the cool groove in it to accommodate the path for the front throttle cable. Unfortunately this is omitted from the Monty - probably to make it cheaper to make :(
Neither of the Laguna Seca or the Santamonica have an aluminium tank :( Which is a shame.

Though I have heard a Myth that there was a Japanese F3 with an aluminium tank -but I am yet to see one. Hope yours is! Can you confirm this myth? Or will it be BUSTED?

Mike, it is in I Falloon's book about the first F3's had the monj. alum tank. Although the previous owner had put '85 F1 bodywork (no elephants) & forks on it. So maybe the tank arrived then too.

Please post a picture of your F3 when you get a chance.

Cheers,

Hey Harvey, That is an interesting setup for your rear carb! And how about your choke lever ;)

hi Peter, Cool bike, there are some nice upgrades with the F&R Gold Line Brembo calipers and the alloy swingarm :) But I regret to say that you have a steel tank :(

FYI, I would prefer to have your alloy (Laguna Seca style) swingarm over an aluminium tank any day :P I think your bike would look great with a set of (fatter 8-) ) Paso 16" wheels - that you can now readily get excellent quality tyres for. ;)

There are three different aluminium tanks as below. Aluminium tanks can be distinguished by the fact they do not have a seam around the base of the tank as steel tanks do - see bottom picture.

Below: 1985 750 F1 Aluminium Type 1 with screw on filler cap. Note the lack of a seam on the tank where it meets the frame rail. This tank has the Giugiaro designed DUCATI font. This photo taken at Easter this year at Ian Gowanloch's shed. Yes I asked him could I buy it, but he says it is for his F1! 8-) Meanwhile I have reserved 1st dibs on it 8-)

Below: 1985 750 F1 Aluminium Type 2 with aircraft filler cap. As with the type 1 above there is a groove in bottom of the tank to accommodate the throttle cable run. Note: This tank would normally have the Giugiaro font instead of the Cagiva style font but the photo is of the Pre-Production Montjuich bike first shown at the 1985 Sydney Motorcycle show. This photo taken this Easter at the BBB. This bike has just been restored and hastily put together to show at the BBB and thus does not have the throttle cable routed correctly.

Below: 1986 750 F1 Montjuich Aluminium Type 3 with aircraft filler cap. Note that the groove for the throttle cable is no longer there. My bike, This photo taken this Easter at the BBB.

Below: 1986 750 F1 steel tank with Cagiva style DUCATI font. This tank as fitted to the Laguna Seca, Santamonica (White), all 1986 750 F1s and all F3s. Note the seam that runs around the bottom of the tank, visible above the upper frame rail. This feature is the simplest way to identify a steel tank. Else have a magnet handy.

Yes you are right I'm sorry. I was getting mixed up with my 851 kit bike. I'm not very mobile with my broken leg at the moment, so I couldn't go out and check.
Those calipers were black orig, so I guess they are standard - P2F05N's. Which leads onto my next question , is it hard to track down the P08's ?
Also what headstem angle should I be shooting for ? Is this influenced by wheel size ? I plan to run 18in wheels. 24degrees ?
I don't want any understeering tendencies.
