hello all.

it's been a while since i've been here, not sure why now. i had a nagging feeling i was missing something.

does anyone know how much oil goes in a 38mm fork for an 85 model? i only have an 86> manual.

Hello Brad. Falloon's 2-valve book shows 250cc for the 1985 F1 with 38mm forks. MikeV

thanks mike. i figured it'd be something like that, but it's nice to have an accurate #.

Well, I am not sure that Falloon is 100% accurate (heresy), but the figure looks reasonable compared to all the forks he has listed. MikeV

i'd like a copy if possible, brad at bikeboy dot org

it did have more than 250 in it, and i was surprised at how high the oil level was with 250. i didn't collapse them due to pitting on the
legs (don't need to cause myself agro), but it would have been quite high.

also how soft the skinny little std springs are. they calculated out at 0.55 kg/mm. don't think i've seen a fork spring with 63 coils before.

You didn't put those stock springs back in...did you?

yep. the owner says the front feels very hard. like many owners, he's not really interested in that sort of thing.

what would you recommend in them? i was thinking a 0.80 would be about right. but i doubt he'd go for it.

then you have to worry about the damping (or complete lack thereof) too i guess.

Ignorance is bliss I guess. Too bad. He'll never know what he's missing. But why does he ride an F1??

Yeah, once you start, you got to do the whole thing - both ends. .80 to .85 should be about right if he's average weight. I'm curious what the measurement would have been to the top of the oil from the top of the tube with spring out and tube bottomed, but apparently you thought there was too much tube pitting to do that. Hard to believe the ride is firm with those stock springs, unless there is not much air in there to also act as a spring. Maybe harsh would be a better word, especially if the stock shock is on it. There is no hope for that thing, it's strictly remove and replace.

I'll mention the Race Tech web site again. There is a lot of good information on there if you dig around and click on stuff. I just re-did the forks on my old R90s with their gold valves, springs, modifications and set up. I'm dying to try it out, but there is still 2 to 3 feet of snow and ice outside...(quoting Carlo here)...fuck!
