Can anyone confirm that the outer cam bearing (the one that goes into the bolt-on block) is sealed on one side, & if so, does the seal go toward the cam or away from it?

Yes, the bearing has a seal on one side and that side goes to the cam side. The oil is feed into the head on that side and oils the bearing and goes through the cam to oil the cam lobes and other end bearings.

Thanks Palmer - that's what I thought, but I couldn't find any mention of it anywhere & it was quite some time ago when I pulled the engine down so I just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something.

Palmer, did you mean the oil is fed from the open (hidden) side of the bearing? MikeV

That's the way I worked it out Mike - oil is feed through the head into the cavity behind the bearing in the block & then into the camshaft, so the seal is necessary to keep oil pressure up.
