618f1,thanks so much for your advice,i really do appreciate it.I shall start going back through the various posts to gather info, but already I have a fair confidence in the way forward.Thanks.And it seems such a waste to have my 500 engine just sitting on the bench.

Having said what I have, I think many (silent) would say you should start with a 750 engine case, and especially 750-sized gears. It [ CORRECTION - "IT" MEANT THE 500cc ENGINE ] has small webbing inside it around the gears and crank. The 500 gears are just plain tiny (narrow), and the clutch is also small and (reportedly) weak. Even a wet-clutch 750 (with swingarm pin area modifications) would be better, and could be made to look "period" if you wish. You would be using the 88-90mm cylinders, and they would slip in. The 500 heads are fine for modifications, if a bit small around the ports, but I have been told that is what the factory started with and used till the mid-80s. Carlo might be able to help you with that, and he (Italy) is close to you (UK?), I think.

Then, you know what FREE ADVISE is worth!

again,i thank you.Since my last post,as luck would have it,i,ve just located and bought a good, good Paso 750 engine complete from a good running bike. I collect over the weekend and then I can start moving forward, the engine just appeared out of the blue.!!! So I think now a reversed head, front head modified to same spec,90 pistons, cam not sure yet,and complete rebuild to race spec rather than road or track day use.I have my full race 600 engine to move on,if I decide to let it go,which should go some way to balancing my outlay. I already have a set of 40 mm carbs and short inlet stubs. And I,ll use digital ignition. Looking forward to starting the build and collecting the bits. And searching through previous posts.Rather than modifying the cases,i,m hoping to fit an alloy swingarm to suit the Paso cases.

Ian if you look at my bike I have used the paso SA spindle with alloy outrigger plates for extra supports, I used 4 roller bearings in the harris SA.
It works fine just depends on how original you want it to look.
Are you at cadwell this weekend ?

I,ve noticed your swingarm fix auburn and its a good job,but I,ve got my mind on alloy swingarm made up to suit the frame and wider wheels/tyres. I,ll not be at Cadwell as I,m going down to Donnington to collect the Paso motor which I sorted earlier today. You have a good day and ride safe,i hope I,ll meet you sometime in the future to share our passion.

You are aware the paso SA is a smaller diameter than the pantah.

Yes,but I have an idea to get round the problem, with bushes, which I think will work fine. The fabrication I hope to have done by Tony Baker of racing sidecar building fame, makes some of the best outfits on course. This way I hope to leave the cases and frame untouched, the only mod will be to the swingarm,it,s also possible that the swingarm may be made from chrome moly rectangle tube, lightweight,as the factory once used, and it,ll be a bit different but closely resemble the original.

Just back from collecting my paso engine, its from a low mileage bike and looks to be in good order throughout. The work will start shortly. Redfox do the rear heads for a 900,but I,m not sure about the 750,i will check Tuesday,i may have to go the other route and have mine modified,or have the 500 heads modified, not sure which way to go. Hoping I can just pack them off overseas and get them done.No one in England seems to be doing this conversion, but I also remember Sports posting that they may be doing some. I,m not too good with emails and the like, too old to take new technology on board,so I,ll just have to rack up the phone bill.I missed out on a good motor a couple of years ago when I was not too sure what the classic regs were to be,wish I,d gone that way now.Live and learn,as they say.

Hello Ian,

Some time ago I searched the internet for information about Colisbro guides , and came across these folk in the south of England.

http://blrengineering.co.uk/ BLR Engineering

I can't remember if it was this company which offered the conversion you are looking for , but I think it was they who I spoke to by telephone .

Surely there must be someone capable in UK ?

I would be interested to know .

salut,

Dick

much obliged for that tip,i,ll try to make contact with them, fingers crossed,. I would have thought someone here would be doing this sort of work as the bikes might just be starting to get popular again for post classic racing, and it,s only the heads that are the main problem. I,ll keep you posted ,thanks.
