Hi all,

what's the difference in fuel tank design, beside Alloy and Steel?
Is the Montjuich fuel tank wider? The inner part deeper / longer?
OR a hoax of the work shop Manual?

Please enlighten me, I want to commission an alloy fuel tank
with a steel tank as model

cheers,
horst

Horst,

The aluminum F1 tanks (As and Montjuich) tanks have a larger capacity down in the bottom of the tank between the frame rails. The aluminum tanks are 20 liters where the steel are 18 liters, I believe. The top parts of the tanks are very similar to each other but not exact.

Hi Carlo, your picture shows a very interesting detail. Correct me if I am wrong but that is a Montjuich aluminum tank? It bolts to the frame in the lower front of the tank, like the steel f1 tank? My old F1a model tank (first series f1) had an aluminum tank that was attached by a strap in the front and a bolt in the rear. It sat lower in the frame than the Montjuich. I even think the frame on the F1a model were the tank bolts down in the rear is different. The Montjuich cross brace steps down for the tank tab and the F1a has a straight cross brace. Lou

Hello,

Here are some photos of an original 85 F1 tank (on the left) next to an original 86 F1 Montjuich tank (on the right).
They are both aluminium alloy.
The Montjuich tank is attached by two bolts at the front, just like a normal steel F1 tank, whereas the 85 F1 is held down by a single strap. There are many other structural differences between an 85 F1 tank and the Montjuich apparent in the photos and the tanks are not easily interchangeable.
Not readily apparent in the photos is the different shades of red between the two tanks.

Hope the photos clarify some points of issue.

FWIW, the Montjuich tank looks identical in dimension to a Laguna Seca tank(i.e. steel 750 F1 tank) but it is aluminium and the LS tank is steel.

Hi Horst

Here are some more images of a steel vs aluminium tank. The tank on the left is a steel tank off an 86 f1 which has mounting bolts at the front lower edge of the tank. The tank on the right is off an 85 f1 and has the rubber bung arrangement at the front top of the tank. The aluminium tank obviously holds alot more fuel than the steel version, and has an obvious weight saving as evident by the photos. The aluminium tank has an obvious hand made feel and look to it, where as the steel tank is made from steel pressings and looks a lot more like a factory product.

I have had the dents removed from both tanks by a very good panel beater friend that I trust and he has put a light skim of filler over the remainder of the dents that he could not reach or remove. I have photos of the aluminium tank pre panel beating for reference. Yes I would like to sell both of these tanks either together or separately.

regards Hamish
