Well, we're pulling the engine. Before firing, Bruce wanted to be sure the oil lines to the heads had flow restrictions, but none were present. We put some in and fired it up. Allowed it to fully warm up, but Bruce was feeling a subtle vibration he didn't like and it never stopped smoking. So before going any further, it's coming apart. Disappointing, but clearly the thing to do. This will allow more time to continue chassis debugging, but making the July 9th track day is in question. Bill |

I think the flip tone of my last post might have implied we were not happy with the condition of the bike we got from Paul. That is absolutely not the case. Paul did a really nice job getting it ready, and we are very happy to have it. What we found in the engine took place long before Paul got it, and took someone with Bruce's experience to recognize that there might be a problem within and the need to tear it down. So thank you Paul, for finding, rescuing, starting it's revival, and allowing us to pick up where you left off. The engine had a 820 big bore kit installed, and there were signs that something had let go at some point. The iron lined cylinders had scoring. One of the bearings had a good chip taken out of the outer race. The pistons are very early Wisco, with a good 2mm piston to head clearance. Rods are early '90's Carrillo. The crank balancing is way off, like it was done backwards. All the dogs in the gearbox were badly rounded off. The heads, valves, and clutch are o.k. The engine had a hard life back in the day, and the workmanship on it (not Paul's) was not impressive, but saveable. It's an old war horse, and they can be "interesting" to take apart. I had a pair of cylinders for it, so we can return it to a 750. Bruce had a nicely reconditioned late Paso gearbox for it, with the nice long fine pitch shaft, so no offset sprocket issues. We would like to completely change it over to the later Kokusan ignition, but we need to find ALL the parts. So Bruce is underway with the engine, and I have a plan for the chassis. The only parts I'm desperately wanting is a pair of quick release caliper adapters for 300mm rotors. HELP!! We're thinking with a little luck it might be ready for the big TT/F! party at Loudon in early September. We shall see. Bill |

Amazing how engines can still run at times, isn't it Bill? Some "mechanics" do the strangest things! Don't throw those parts away; someone is probably looking for them. MikeV |
