On a lot of cars and bikes the VIN will tell you all sorts of things, is this true of the 750 F1 too? The VIN on my bike is ZDM750R7500083.

So ZDM I understand means ducati motorcycle. And 83 is the build number. Anything else interesting? Apologies for the trainspotting......? :shock:

Nothing much to add except the following:

Example: ZDM750R7500083
Z = Italy
DM = Ducati (GU = Moto Guzzi)
750 - Engine size - 750cc
R = All tri-colour 750 F1 bikes -all years it was made
M = Montjuich
LS = Laguna Seca and Santamonica
The remaining numbers (except Montjuich) are the build sequence that begins with 75 (which also probably denotes engine size.)
7500083 = the 83rd 750 F1 tri-colour ever made

Example: ZDM750LS-750096
LS = Laguna Seca and Santamonica
750096 = 96th Laguna Seca ever made.
Santamonica begins at LS-750303

Example: ZDM750M-016
M = Montjuich
016 = the 16th Montjuich ever made.

Note - USA models have a 17 digit VIN - which does not conform to the above protocol.

Goggling VIN decoding info doesn't seem to reveal anything interesting with your number. Some number plug in sites require 17 numbers and say just to add zeros on the end of shorter numbers. Here's a Ducati orientated explanation, but seems to relate better to newer stuff: http://www.ducatimonster.org/forums/general-monster-forum/170773-decode-999-vin.html

If it helps, I always thought that the R meant Race Replica 8-)

That makes sense really as M obviously means Montjuich and LS obviously means Laguna Seca. So the R must have had some meaningful word behind it. 'May also be a tribute to Tony Rutter? I guess we will never know for sure.
