OK, who's coming across to the Philip Island International Classic on 22/24th of January ??

We are booked in with Chris Swallow and new rider Tim Barnes on a couple of 500 TT2's. Weirdly the Aussie rules mean running a 600 puts us up against the unlimited Pre82 class Jap growlers (XR69's etc) so am building two 500cc short stroke motors as an little experiment for the smaller class. It wouldn't have been so bad if it was just the two engines to create and lift them into the current bikes. However, we have the Classic Festival in Pukekoe to attend two weeks later so they will be still bobbing around on the ocean making their way home. Hence two complete bikes from scratch are needed for Australia.
Never mind, still a couple of weeks to go before crating them up.

Hmm, -- need two crates too.

unfortunately not for me this year Glyn, I'll need one of those 500 motors before I venture across the Tasman. I've entered the Classic Festival at Pukekohe. Not raced there since 2011. Friends have convinced the concrete barriers they installed for the V8 Cars are ok provided you treat them with a bit of respect :o

The Shorai International last month was a great success for the Ducatisti. Four Duc's in the top 6 for the pre '82 Junior, could have been 5 if Jed hadn't come off in practice.......

Have a great trip and I'll catch up with you in February at Pukekohe

Definitely be at Pukekoe with the TT2 and F1 in February. The Ducati presence on the grid is growing at quite a rate in NZ and long term I hope we can get our own race. Speaking of which, my longer plan is to develop the Spondon 851 this year and take it to Philip Island in 2017.
I have had recent unextected interest from the Ducati owners club magazine in the old 4 valve special. As a consequence I dragged it from it's hiding place in the corner of the workshop and gave it a quick rub over for some pics to support the article. Hmmm, thinking it should maybe be running again after it's 23 years in a coma. To put it another way, it hasn't crept back to it's corner for another long sleep. It's now right in the middle of the workshop so I walk round it 50 times a day. New belts and Castrol R40 are ordered in anticipation of the strip down. I will post some pics in the hot rod bit.

Busy crating them both up today and tomorrow then drive to the shippers in Auckland on Wednesday. Took some pics whilst they are shiny in case the boys try a little too hard at PI.

File comment: P08 calipers on 280mm discs. Pantah 35mm forks with mounts for P05 calipers and 260mm discs. The single bracket at the top caliper mount does all the conversion. Lower caliper hole is sleeved for an 8mm bolt in the existing mount hole. The forks are fitted with the adjustable 'Sports valves'

File comment: Short stroke engine means 5mm shorter barrels. Belt tension is countered by machining pulleys with an extra tooth.

A beautiful pair of bikes. Do you have a picture of the rear brake pedal set up on the r/h shift bike?

Between your's and Huit's bikes the details are overwhelming.

I see another version of outside-the-case timing pickups; are those stock something behind that plate, with the trigger on a wheel attached to the outer cam cog? Any igniter boxes needed?

And, no oil coolers? In OZ in the summer?

Finally, are the stock pistons (I think) holding up?

Pic of the gear change cross over shaft for you. The mechanism is crossed bottom to top on the left side as well as left to right side for his race pattern shift. The shaft itself is made up by welding a couple of splined gear shaft ends onto a 12mm rod. Held in the swing arm spindle bore by two nylon bushes.

Mike,
The pickups are the std items used with the kokusan system. I machined a ring with a trigger lobe extending for 50 degrees of crank rotation. This ring is clamped back onto the outer pulley face. The reason for the 50 deg being the Ignitech TCIP4 is only programmable within the trigger area as for safety it won't read outside of the trigger signal. Due to the TCIP4 the Kokusan amplifiers are satisfyingly redundant.

Stock 620 pistons are a bit of a gamble but holding up well. I've had them in 'Baby' for two years now and no issues. The short stoke will no doubt stress them further but fingers crossed. I'm setting a 10,5 limiter (same as Baby) and see how we go. If they are still OK by the last race Sunday then 11,5 if we really need it. Early last year as an experiment we had Baby as far as 13,0 before the power tailed off. Pointless running the revs though if the next gear up is still comfortably within the curve.
No oil coolers fitted yet because the Christmas break meant some fittings I ordered in November are still in the post. That's how it is here on the moon. I will hopefully be taking two coolers and some hoses in my luggage on the 18th.

It seems we have some names coming to PI. Paul Smart is attending, together with David Hailwood , Steve and Lester Harris, with Alan Cathcart is hosting the Friday night chat show. I tried to get Steve to come across with us but unfortunately he has friends from the UK visiting. Maybe next year.
