On the proper definition of a Pantah motor.....are all rubber band 2 valve motors Pantahs?? Or is the Technical definition that only the first generation rubber band is a Pantah?? The F1 is not a Pantah because it is a second generation rubber band?

and then what does Pantah mean?

Clay

Good questions. I would say a Pantah engine is the Taglioni designed 90 degree L-twin, with toothed belt driven single overhead cam working two desmodromically controlled valves per cylinder heads. At some point I think a Pantah has come to mean that the exhaust ports face to the front and the intake ports are to the rear. I can't seem to find an explanation of how they became named "Pantah".

Strictly the F1 isn't the secondgeneration Pantah engine.
After the first 1979 series (red fairing) came the better gearbox and clutch and 600s.
Mid eighties Cagiva used the 350s and dryclutch 650, same crankcases as the Ducati Indiana.
The F1 is just the ULTIMATE Pantah ;-)

After Ducati used the Darmah (tigre in the tv series Sandokan) they came up with the Pantah (the first morse chained belt letterboxfairing ) the Utah and the Rollah (chopped Pantah not unlike the recent Borile).
Guess they wanted to develop a serie of (partly compatible) bikes with similarsounding names just like the waterpumps that all had names of a tree and just before they started cashing in on the MHR name story.

At about the same time everyone started using names instead of types, Ducati couldn't stay behind.

ciao

I was actually afraid to ask such a simple question, I know most of you on this list are hard core motor head Ducati nuts, I am more of a lightweight. I thought I might receive the knuckle head award.....or be banned from the list :D .

Is a Pantah a Panther?? A fast cat like the Darmah is tiger. For some reason, I thought I had seen a few advertisements back in the day that had some kind of cat pictured? But can no longer remember for sure.

Bill is vying for the knucklehead award, but I will not be dethroned! Yes, no lightweights on this Forum, no question too elementary. Lou
