Post subject:  Ported intake manifold question

Mike V. and myself are both in the process of converting cylinder heads to bigger valves and the corresponding bigger intake ports. Naturally the intake manifolds will need to be enlaged to match the heads.

This is where we have a question. The manifolds use a large o-ring to seal the intake and provide some damping as well, but when opening up the manifold the inner retaining lip for the o-ring will be removed. How do you seal up the manifold now? Can the large o-ring still be utilized, or is there the danger of it now being sucked into the intake? Would a thin piece of rubber or viton cut like a gasket between the manifold flange and head be the answer? Sort of like the old bevel twin manifold insulators only thinner. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Dave

how about just machining an aluminium ring to fill the remainder of the groove and use a gasket like a later model.

Will there be a problem with vibrations getting to the carbs Brad? These are the slip-on carbs with the plastic rings inside the carb spigot. I thought the big O-rings were to isolate vibrations like the later rubber-style mounting does. See the photo. Thansk, MikeV

MikeV & Dave,
Will you be using 40mm carbs?
Don't they use the rubber coupling to the manifolds?
I would think for a track bike, the non use of the o-ring can be substituted for a gasket.
How much vibration can damage the carb internals and crack the manifold?
If on the other hand you are using the damped manifolds al la Pantah, then the 2 stud holes are still damped with steel collars and rubber bushes. So, make up a gasket to assist with sealing the face to the head! Hole size determined by your Dremel tools.....
Good luck you petrol heads!
Cheers,
Steve

P.S. Looking at the photo above....those look like 40mm carbs with the damped manifolds...but, notice the huge scollops around the studs....won't be much meat there to Dremel off....

dunno

maybe a grooved thin aluminium ring and an o ring on either side? without seeing it it's hard to know.
